The money – which totals almost £60,000 - will pay for the salaries of two Independent Living Officers over two years.
One Officer will provide support to homeless households - assisting them to sustain their temporary placements, whilst their housing application is being processed.
They will also help explore housing options, with the ultimate aim of helping homeless families to move into permanent accommodation when the time is right.
Tim Edwards, Head of Operational Support at Aspire Housing, said: “We are delighted to have secured funding from Supporting People to help vulnerable people living in the Newcastle area.’’
He continued: “The new programmes will benefit the local community and provide new opportunities for families and young people at an economic time of great need.”
A second Officer is being recruited to set up a ‘Routes into Work’ programme. This programme will be targeting primarily young people who live in temporary accommodation and who may have approached Aspire for re-housing.
The aim of this project is to assist these young people to access one to one support which will help them to prepare for, take up and sustain work-based activities and/or training. The project will aim to strengthen links between housing and work/training advice as part of a wider approach to tackling social exclusion.
