Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Aspire Housing have worked together with young people from Blurton High School to create a sign celebrating the development of Ingestre Square in Blurton.
The project has been funded by Aspire Housing and the city council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Team has worked with them and Blurton High School to decide on the best plot for the sign to be located.
The sign itself has been designed by pupils at the high school, and will be unveiled next Tuesday 16 December at 10.00am, outside the three storey flat complex on Finstock Avenue.
The unveiling will herald the start of new developments in the area, and will be a landmark for the current and future residents of Ingestre Square.
An art exhibition was held at the high school on 25 November to showcase the designs, and members from the Community Steering Group chose the winners from a shortlist of 10.
The winning artists visited AJB Reprographics, based in Fenton, to go through the process of transferring their artwork into the finished sign.
Councillor Joan Bell, portfolio holder for community safety, said: “All the residents of Ingestre Square will now have something to be proud of. It shows how, when residents, the council, and housing authorities work together, we can create something really special for a community.
“Ingestre Square is going to be the site of some exciting new developments in the future and this is just the first step in showing how the community can move forward.”
Gill Wood, Head of Development and Regeneration at Aspire Housing, is thrilled to be working with the local high school and the city council. She said: “Pupils from Blurton High School have really enjoyed working on this project and we are delighted with the result.
The development of Ingestre Square will affect all areas of the community and it is important that local people feel part of the work that is taking place.
We have received a lot of support from local people and will continue to work with the residents’ group on the development of the area, which will bring affordable, quality housing that local people can rent or part own on a shared ownership basis.
