NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: ‘Sloppy’ slippers wanted
Aspire Housing is working with Age Concern North Staffordshire to deliver a ‘sloppy’ slipper exchange for older people in the Chesterton area.
Funded by Aspire Housing, the project is being run alongside the promotion of the company’s Floating Support pilot which is being rolled out in the area.
The aim of the Floating Support programme is to help older people to live at home for as long as possible, by choosing a level of support that suits their individual needs.
The service is currently available to all older people living in the Chesterton area, not just Aspire Housing customers. The service supports independence and choice through the use of a 24 hour alarm service and personal visits by a member of our Independent Living Support Team.
Julia Downs, Independent Living Manager at Aspire Housing is delighted to be supporting this project and said: “We would encourage people to come along to the slipper exchange days with their less safe slippers for a new pair, especially designed to prevent falls. In addition, people will also receive information on the prevention of falls and have the opportunity to exchange their walking sticks.
She continued:“The aim of the project is to reduce the number of falls amongst older people in Chesterton and we hope as many people as possible take advantage of the project.”
National research statistics indicate that falls and the consequences have a major impact on health, independence and well being of older people and their families.
Over 400,000 older people attend the Accident and Emergency Department each year, following an accidental fall and up to 14,000 people die annually in the UK as a result of osteoporotic hip fractures.
The project will run from Kent Grove Sheltered Housing Scheme in Chesterton and twice weekly “drop in” sessions will run from 14 February to 27 March.
The sipper exchange is being launched on Tuesday 12 February at 10.30am where Aspire Housing’s Sheltered Housing customers living on the Sheltered Housing Scheme at Kent Grove will be invited to take part in the project.
