Role of the team
Aspire Housing’s Minor Adaptations service is available to any Aspire customer who has a disability or is vulnerable and requires assistance to help them retain their independence in their own home. The service is based within the Independent Living team
Is there a service charge?
There is no cost for any of the work carried out. We must, however, satisfy ourselves that the work which is being requested is 'reasonable and practical' in order to support customer’s needs and is a suitable solution to aid their independence.
There are certain situations when a request for an adaptation will not be approved as follows:
- You have made an application to purchase your home.
- There is a large amount of rent arrears; this request will require careful consideration by the Neighbourhood Manager.
- Any structural changes to your home are required.
- Works required exceed the minor adaptations budget so becomes classed as a major adaptation.
What is a major adaptation?
Where major adaptations are being requested such as:
- Stair lifts
- Level access showers
- Equipment for daily living
- Major ramps
- Ceiling Track Hoist
- Door Widening
- Ground Floor extensions…
All requests for major adaptations are dealt with by Social Care and Health (previously known as Social Services). The request is then subject to comprehensive assessment including input from the Occupational Therapist in order to determine whether the adaptation will need to be funded via the Disabled Facilities Grant (through Newcastle Borough Council).
Any request for a major adaptation is a lengthy process and the Minor Adaptations Officer here at Aspire Housing is happy to assist you in the completion of the referrals forms to Social Care and Health and, if you wish, will keep in touch with you during the process.
You can contact Social Care and Health direct on telephone 01782 296005. The Adaptations Officer at Aspire Housing can be contacted on telephone 01782 635200
