Aspire Housing plans to invest £14m in a flagship older persons’ scheme of 90 apartments in Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre.
The project will involve the redevelopment of the Ashfields Grange and Hall Street flats site on the town centre ring road, creating a state-of-the-art independent living scheme that will provide 90 affordable, modern, one and two-bed apartments for older people.
The proposed new development will also operate as a community hub for older people and partner organisations within the local area, providing them with a place to socialise and engage in a range of activities and events.
Dan Gray, Executive Director of Property at Aspire Housing, commented: “We believe that the proposed older persons’ village in this prime town centre location will be a fantastic use of this site, providing our customers with suitable housing that allows them to live independently and to build an active and sociable community.
“The existing properties at Ashfields Grange cannot easily or cost effectively be upgraded to meet the aspirational standards that are rightly expected by older people. So, after careful consideration, we made the decision to propose a complete redevelopment that would meet and exceed these standards.
“Our primary focus at the moment is the wellbeing of our customers who currently live at the site. We have been individually supporting and consulting with the residents at Ashfields Grange and the adjacent Hall Street flats and will ensure that we find them a new home that meets their requirements, and we will continue to support throughout with arrangements for the move.
“We will offer any relocated residents from Ashfields Grange and Hall Street, who meet the criteria for the scheme, one of the new properties should they wish to return once the development is completed.”
The redevelopment is set to be submitted for planning approval later this year and forms part of our long-term investment to enhance our service offer to older people.
