Aspiring for a Greener Future
We’re delighted to publish our first Sustainability Strategy. It’s an evolutionary blueprint for ensuring a sustainable future for our business, our homes, our people and our communities.
We recognise the climate emergency and the need to act now across the whole group.
We want people to see the difference we are making in how we work, learn and live.
Our homes are our biggest source of carbon emissions and will require significant long-term investment.
Building a more sustainable future
Although our homes are the biggest emitter of carbon and will require significant investment to achieve net zero by 2050, this framework applies across the group to direct the way we operate and who we will work with going forward.
Environmental sustainability will be at the heart of our decision-making, recognising that we face a climate emergency and that the time to take action is now. We want our residents, learners and colleagues to see the impact we are having on reducing our emissions and creating a more sustainable place to work, learn and live.
Our homes remain the biggest source of carbon emissions across the group.
We are working towards a lower-carbon future through long-term investment and action.

Measuring our environmental impact
We use recognised assessment frameworks to understand where we are making progress and where we need to go further.
SHIFT stands for Sustainable Homes Index For Tomorrow and is an assessment that calculates how well a business is performing across a range of environmental factors.
For 2022, we gained a silver accreditation, demonstrating the progress made since our original bronze accreditation.
SHIFT covers the full range of environmental impacts across 21 criteria, including carbon dioxide emissions, water use, landfill waste, biodiversity and response to climate change risks. This helps us understand the actions we can take to reduce environmental impact and improve sustainability standards.
What SHIFT looks at
The framework covers several key parts of the business, helping create a complete picture of where improvements can be made.
Existing properties
Assessing the sustainability of existing asset management and how homes are maintained over time.
New build standards
Benchmarking the standards to which new homes are designed and built for the future.
Leadership and strategy
Demonstrating organisational commitment and embedding sustainability in decision-making.
Supply chain
Looking at our biggest suppliers and the wider environmental impact of how we work with partners.
The race is on.
We are constantly finding new ways to improve and move closer to our ultimate goal of reaching net zero by 2050 — creating more sustainable homes, stronger communities and a greener future for everyone connected with Aspire.
